Diamond DA20-C1
By Paul Davis on 7/1/2006 3:51 AM

Monday bright and early I'll be getting checked out in the Diamond DA20-C1.  It's a nice little low wing, two seater with a stick in stead of the controls I'm used to from the Cessna.

Should be interesting and I'll post how it goes.

Learned something new.
By Paul Davis on 7/1/2006 3:48 AM

I was checking the blade tracking on my Raptor 30 Helicopter and looked away for just a second.  It was on the ground but a gust of air picked just that time to force it's way under the rotor and start tilting it over.

I corrected it and it started going the other way.  My uncle now has a nice deep little trench in it and I got to replace my first set of blades on the raptor.  :)  Moral of the story is keep your eye on the ball.

Passed the flight review
By Paul Davis on 6/6/2006 5:04 PM

Every two years a pilot needs to pass a flight review.  Doesn't matter how much a person flies they still need to spend an hour of ground training and an hour of training in the air with an instructor.

All the ground stuff went really well. I couldn't believe how it all came right back to me since after the check ride I've done pretty much everything on the computer with flight planning software and spread sheets.

The air work took a little longer.  Not because of me but the because of the afternoon thunder storms we have around here in the afternoon.  After two attempts I was finally able to get up in the air and have a go.  I was a little rusty and I could definatly use some practice but all in all I think I didn't do to bad.  The CFI was impressed enough to sign me off though and that's all that matters.

Next to get checked out in the Diamond DA20-C1.

16 Reasons Airplanes are better than Women
By Paul Davis on 2/23/2006 10:35 AM
1) Airplanes usually kill you quickly; a woman will take her time.
2) Airplanes can be turned on by a flick of a switch.
3) Airplanes don't get mad if you do a "touch and go"
4) Airplanes don't object to a pre-flight inspection.
5) Airplanes come with manuals to explain their operation.
6) Airplanes have strict weight and balance limitations.
7) Airplanes can be flown any time of the month.
8) Airplanes don't come with in-laws.
9) Airplanes don't care about how many other airplanes you've flown
before.
10) Airplanes and pilots both arrive at the same time.
11) Airplanes don't mind if you look at other airplanes.
12) Airplanes don't mind if you buy airplane magazines.
13) Airplanes expect to be tied down.
14) Airplanes don't comment on your piloting skills.
15) Airplanes don't w hine unless something is really wrong.
16) However, when airplanes go quiet, j ...

Cirrus brakes overheating
By Paul Davis on 12/28/2005 11:00 AM

Evidently Cirrus General Aviation planes are having a problem with their brakes.  Of course it's Pilot error.   Also of course I would read about it first on law.harvard.com website.  It looks like he is a fellow Pilot so I'll give him the benefit of doubt. Philip Greenspun makes a good point about the placement of the parking brake.  I learned to fly in a Cessna 172SP and it was pretty hard to miss the parking brake.

I still wouldn't mind owning an SR20 though.  Promise I'll check the brake.  :)

My buddy Curtis just mentioned to me who Philip Greenspun is.  I would like to be this guy.  :)  And not only for the Cirrus SR20.

Aircraft problems become the new LA Car chases
By Paul Davis on 12/27/2005 3:00 PM

I started noticing this with the Nike Jet that had the landing gear problem awhile back.  I've got CNN showing on my desk just about all day unless I'm testing something and I've seen just about all of the recent problems with aircraft of all types and sizes.  From the BeechCraft doing a belly landing to the 767 landing in LA with nose gear turned the wrong way.

Aircraft having problems isn't new but it's not really all that common either. Almost always everything comes out fine too.  The article looks at why we like watching this kind of thing or is it just a FOX news thing.  It's pretty interesting.

Biggest passenger plane ever
By Paul Davis on 12/16/2005 3:00 PM
What to see pictures of the biggest passenger airplane ever being built?  The Airbus 380 is 49 % larger than the Boeing 747.  It's to bad that the airlines will jam it up with little tiny seats wedged in anywhere they find space.

Curtis
By Paul Davis on 11/21/2005 3:00 PM

My friend Curtis who Runs www.knick-knack.com and created the hydrostacker site was one of the many people who sent me a link for the Nike Jet.

He was or is one of the lucky ones that has moved back to Denver.  He also takes a LOT of pictures and has a few pretty amazing ones posted on his site.  I encourge you to check it out.
